A Slice of Comfort in Baguio: Why Vizco’s Will Always Have My Heart

Written by:

In a city as vibrant and memory-soaked as Baguio, everyone has their comfort spots. For me, that place—the true anchor of my personal history in the Summer Capital—is a homegrown gem called Vizco’s Restaurant and Cake Shop.

I’ve tried, many times, to write about Vizco’s. I always fail, not for a lack of words, but for fear of not capturing the exact feelin. It’s more than just a restaurant; it’s a living photo album, a quiet, non-judgmental witness to the messy, beautiful years of my life. Its walls, I imagine, have absorbed the hushed tones of new love, the boisterous laughter of triumphs, and yes, the heavy silence that follows a heartbreak.

Vizco’s was often the backdrop for life’s heavier moments. It’s where friends gathered to dissect a failure or celebrate a tiny win. It’s where my ex-girlfriend and I would retreat after long, cold walks, warming up with something sweet and something savory. It bore silent witness to the quiet grief of a significant breakup, offering a necessary haven for tears and eventual healing. The restaurant holds space for the profound aches and breaks of my heart—and somehow, coming back now, still feels like coming home.
But let’s talk about the food that anchors these memories.

The menu itself is a roster of comfort classics. Nothing is overly complicated, yet everything is flawlessly executed. For a cozy evening, the Sundried Tomato and Garlic Pasta is a must, its olive oil-soaked tomatoes and pungent garlic hitting all the right savory notes. On a more indulgent day, the Vizco’s Fried Chicken—crispy, juicy, and served with a surprisingly light Caesar salad—is pure nostalgia on a plate. It’s the perfect foil to the sweet-tart, always refreshing Vizco’s Houseblend Lemon Iced Tea, which I can never get enough of. If I’m feeling green, the creamy, herby Chicken Pesto is my go-to.
And then, there are the cakes. Oh, the cakes.

Vizco’s is arguably most famous for its confectionery. Their Strawberry Shortcake is a Baguio legend, embodying the city’s spirit with its cloud-like cream and abundance of fresh, sweet-tart strawberries. But my loyalty is split. There’s the unique, earthy sweetness of their vibrant Ube Cake, a truly Filipino experience, and the lighter, fruity delight of the Mango Cake. And for a touch of warm, classic comfort, a slice of their flaky French Apple Pie is simply unmatched.

The truth is, my love for Vizco’s isn’t just about the perfectly balanced pasta, the crisp chicken, or the iconic cakes. It’s about the feeling that washes over me the moment I step inside: the warm lighting, the faint, comforting aroma of baked sugar and brewing coffee, and the realization that this place has stood firm while life spun around it.
Vizco’s is more than a restaurant. It’s a keeper of secrets, a baker of dreams, and a silent friend who has seen me at my best and my worst. And for that, it will forever be my favorite slice of Baguio.
