The Land of Fire, Ice, and Unforgettable Stories — Iceland Trip 2017

Written by:

Life’s most unforgettable stories are written in the journeys we dare to take. For me, the most surreal chapter of that story was written across the volcanic plains and glacial winds of Iceland. It is a place of dreamlike exquisiteness where natural wonders are simply off the charts. With its overwhelming, unbelievable landscape, one would surely find their eyeballs popped and jaws dropped.

My five-day stay felt like stepping into another dimension—a land where the earth breathes steam and the light plays tricks on your soul. Even then, I know what I witnessed was just a speck of what this Nordic giant truly offers.

The Heartbeat of Reykjavik
My journey began in the world’s northernmost capital. Reykjavik is a city that balances modern creativity with ancient heritage. Standing before the Sun Voyager, a massive steel sculpture resembling a Viking longship, I felt the call of the horizon. The architecture of Hallgrímskirkja towers over the city like a sentinel of basalt columns, offering a grounding presence to the whimsical streets below.

I spent hours wandering, diving into history at the National Museum, and even indulging a bit of curiosity at the unique Icelandic Phallological Museum. Of course, no walk is complete without the senses being led by the scent of Icelandic pastries and local delicacies—a necessary fuel for the cold winds that define the North.

Where the Earth Meets the Sky
Beyond the city limits, the wildness of Iceland truly takes hold. I found myself hiking Mount Esja, feeling the burn in my lungs and the triumph of the view from the top. I took a ferry to Viðey Island, where silence is a physical presence, broken only by the lapping waves and the cry of seabirds.

The waterfalls, however, are where Iceland shows its raw power. Standing before Skógafoss, the mist drenching my face, I felt the sheer scale of nature. It leads you toward the dramatic coastline of the Black Sand Beach (Reynisfjara).

There, the contrast of the obsidian-colored sand against the crashing white foam of the Atlantic is a monochromatic masterpiece that no camera can fully capture.

A Soul-Stirring Conclusion
After the intensity of the hikes and the cold spray of the falls, nothing compares to the embrace of the Blue Lagoon. Soaking in those milky-blue, mineral-rich geothermal waters while the crisp air swirls above is the ultimate sensory reset. It is a moment of pure stillness in a world that often moves too fast.

Iceland isn’t just a destination; it’s a reminder that we are small, and the world is magnificent. It challenges you to look closer, breathe deeper, and move slower.

Don’t be a wasted soul, be “juan”derlust. Take it easy everyjuan!

Loved your shot of the church with the flowers. We just got back from an Iceland trip. Was the scaffolding up around the church when you were there?
