There is a specific kind of magic in revisiting a place that has witnessed the different seasons of your life. For me, Canto Bogchi Joint is more than just a restaurant; itβs a culinary landmark of my years in Baguio. I still vividly remember their humble beginnings in the early 2010s, tucked away in a small food park near Wright Park. Back then, it was a “hidden gem” we whispered about, but the flavors were already loud and unforgettable.

Throughout my years working at the university, Canto was the unanimous vote among colleagues whenever we needed to celebrate. From faculty milestones to quiet weekend catch-ups, their tables have held the weight of our stories and the remnants of many a feast. Even as they migrated to Kisad and later that cozy, secluded nook at the Leonard Wood Road Loop, the loyalty of both locals and tourists followed.

The last time I sat down for a Canto meal was on my birthday in March 2021. Life, business, and the general hum of a busy schedule meant that five years slipped by before I found my way back. This time, I visited their newest iteration: Loop by Canto at Maria Basa.

A New Scenery for Old Memories
While the new location is a bit further from my usual haunts, the drive was well worth it. I was pleasantly surprised to find a space that feels both sophisticated and serene. The aesthetics are a dreamβthink warm wood accents, expansive glass windows that let the Baguio light filter in, and lush hanging greeneries that bring the outside in. It is, quite simply, lovely.

My visit wasn’t just for a trip down memory lane; I was there to scout the location for our upcoming Story Candle PH workshops on May 2nd and 3rd. As I walked through the space, I knew instantly it was the perfect spot. The quiet atmosphere and the botanical-meets-industrial design provide exactly the kind of creative sanctuary our participants need to blend their scents and pour their soy candles.

The Unchanging Legend: The Ribs
Of course, I couldn’t visit without ordering the “star of the show.” I went straight for the classic: The Canto Ribs.
True to form, the ribs were spectacularβspectacularly soft, savory, and truly “fall-off-the-bone.” They are paired with that signature creamy mashed potato and a salad that is quintessentially Baguio: fresh greens tossed with bits of strawberry, watermelon, and crushed peanut brittle for that iconic crunch. Every bite felt like a nostalgic hug.

To wash it all down, I had the Peach Mango Refresher, which was perfectly thirst-quenching. I also ventured into new territory with their Chilled Taho with Matcha Syrup. While the matcha was a fun twist, at β±150 per order, it felt a bit pricey for the portion, though it was a refreshing end to the meal.
Join Me at Loop
Returning to Canto felt like coming home. Itβs a testament to a local business that has grown without losing its soul. I canβt wait to fill this beautiful new space with the scent of our botanical candles in a few weeks. Whether you’re coming for the ribs or the crafts, this quiet corner of Maria Basa is waiting for you.
