Love Crafted by Hand: A Morning of Light, Scent, and Connection

Written by:

The air at Rebel Bakehouse in Irisan, Baguio City, is usually filled with the irresistible aroma of golden crusts and brewing coffee. But this past February 7, 2025, that scent mingled with something even more enchanting: notes of lavender, citrus, and warm cotton.

I had the absolute pleasure of facilitating “Love Crafted by Hand,” a special candle-making workshop by Story Candle PH. I’ve always believed that the best stories aren’t just told—they are felt. This workshop proved exactly that.

More Than Just Wax and Wicks
With all 15 slots filled, the energy in the room was buzzing. We grouped our participants, turning the cafe into a collaborative studio. Each crafter received a comprehensive kit featuring:
three different candle vessels, premium cotton wicks, six curated fragrance oils and all the essential tools for soy candle making including protective equipment.

However, this wasn’t your “standard” DIY class. We didn’t just melt wax; we shared pieces of ourselves. As we stirred, I asked the participants to think about a scent that holds a core memory for them. We delved into the science of the olfactory system—discussing why our sense of smell is the most powerful bridge to our emotions and past. From childhood smell like crayons, to Christmas scents like cinnamon  to the smell of Baguio pine needles, the goods baked at home, and the stories shared were as beautiful as the candles being made.

A Feast for the Senses
A workshop at Rebel Bakehouse wouldn’t be complete without their legendary hospitality. Between pours, participants fueled their creativity with cups of coffee and tea, paired perfectly with their signature Pain au Chocolat. It truly was a morning of “slow living” at its finest.

Grateful Hearts
This wonderful collaboration wouldn’t have been possible without a few key people:
Danica and Donna of Rebel Bakehouse: Thank you for opening your beautiful space to us.
Aris of The Shared Tables: Your organizational magic made this all flow seamlessly.
The Participants: Your curiosity and openness made this workshop truly special. I hope you enjoy burning your handmade soy candles as much as I enjoyed teaching you the craft!

What’s Next?
If you missed out on this one, don’t worry! Story Candle PH is keeping the flame alive. Join us for our next session:
When: February 21, 2025
Where: The Grounds Co. Cafe, La Trinidad, Benguet
Whether you’re a hobbyist or just looking for a soulful way to spend a morning, I can’t wait to craft more stories with you.
