There’s a saying that scent and taste are the fastest paths to memory. And oh, how true that feels when you visit and dine at a place that instantly transports you back to a cherished moment in time. For me, that place in Baguio City is Himalayan Nepalese Cuisine.
Stepping into their cozy spot at 49 Upper Malvar, Aurora Hill, is like walking through a portal. It’s an immediate, wonderful rush of nostalgia. The aroma of the spices, the comforting feel of the food—it all flashes me back to my incredible travel to Nepal in 2016. It’s such an amazing and visceral feeling to have the smell and taste of food remind you so much of your previous adventures. It’s as if I was back in the bustling streets of Kathmandu, indulging myself with authentic Nepalese food. After my third visit recently, I can confidently say this restaurant is a non-negotiable must-try for anyone seeking authentic South Asian/Himalayan flavors in the Summer Capital of the Philippines.
The Flavors That Define Nostalgia
Himalayan Nepalese Cuisine has quickly become a standout in Baguio’s vibrant food scene, largely thanks to its dedication to authentic flavors and the passion of its owner.
My absolute favorite, and arguably what made this spot popular in Baguio, is their “momo“. These Tibetan/Nepalese dumplings are the perfect bite—tender, savory, and served with a vibrant, spiced dipping sauce (if it’s a “momo cha”) that wakes up your palate. If you try nothing else, try the momo!

But the momo is just the beginning of a truly satisfying culinary journey.
- Chicken Butter Masala: This dish has held a special place in my heart since my very first visit. It’s rich, creamy, and perfectly spiced—the kind of dish that begs to be mopped up entirely with a piece of warm naan (or even rice).
- Parale Mushrooms: This is a delightful surprise! Sautéed oyster mushrooms with bell pepper and tomatoes, it’s essentially a bright and savory dish that tastes like a marvelous vegan rendition of a classic sweet and sour. It’s a texture and flavor explosion that even meat-eaters will adore.

Street Food Perfection: Samosa Chaat and Pani Puri
Beyond the main courses, you absolutely must delve into their selection of traditional South Asian street snacks. These dishes are complex, bursting with fresh ingredients, and offer a true taste of the region’s incredible culinary diversity.
The Pani Puri is a fun and unforgettable eats-perience. Imagine delicate, crispy spheres filled with soft chickpeas and potatoes, ready to be filled with a gorgeous, zesty liquid—a lively lemon cilantro mint sauce. It’s an interactive snack that offers a refreshing burst of flavor and coolness.

Then there is the magnificent Samosa Chaat. Forget the usual simple potato or cheese samosas; this is an elevated experience. The dish features a crushed samosa layered with tender chickpeas (my favorite!), onions, a drizzle of sweet yogurt, a tang of tamarind, a kick of mint chutney, and a sprinkle of fresh cilantro. Can you imagine the sheer explosion of flavors and textures in one mouthful? It’s spicy, sweet, tangy, and creamy all at once—a true masterpiece of balance.

The Grand Feast: Himalayan Royal Thali Set
If you’re feeling adventurous and want a bit of everything, the Himalayan Royal Thali Set is the way to go. A traditional full set meal, the thali is a comprehensive, beautifully arranged platter that provides a perfect introduction to Nepalese cuisine. It consists of either a meat or vegetable curry, hearty lentils (which I always enjoy), crunchy papad, a bowl of dal, and your choice of fluffy basmati rice or a roti. It’s a wonderful way to appreciate the variety and complexity of a Nepalese home-cooked meal.

The Heart Behind the Himalayan Nepalese Cuisine
During my latest visit, I had the pleasure of a quick chat with the owner, Julian, who is half Nepalese and half Filipino. His warmth and passion for this restaurant are palpable. He is incredibly proud to bring such authentic flavors to Baguio. Sharing my fond memories of Nepal from 2016 with him felt like a natural connection—a testament to how food truly is a powerful tool for nostalgia and a beautiful way to appreciate and learn about other cultures.

Thanks for the tip! South Asian cuisine is one of my faves. My wife and I have also been to Nepal once and miss their food. We’ll surely visit this resto next time we’re in Baguio, even if we are now on a plant-based diet. BTW just wanted you to know I’m praying for you. Hang in there…
