Taipei: A Symphony of Neon, Nature, and Nostalgia (Taiwan)

Written by:

Taipei is a city that defies easy categorization. It is a world of captivating divergences—a seamless fusion of hyper-modern ambition and deep-rooted tradition. With an unstinting energy and a vibe so pleasant it feels like a warm embrace, Taipei has firmly established itself as a “must-do” jewel of East Asia.

The Echoes of History
Our journey began by stepping back in time. The National Palace Museum is a treasure trove of imperial history, housing one of the world’s largest collections of ancient Chinese artifacts. The sheer scale of the history here is humbling.
From there, we visited the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall. The stark white marble and blue-tiled roof against the vast Liberty Square create a sense of monumental peace. We then pivoted to the spiritual heart of the city: Longshan Temple. Wrapped in the scent of incense and the low hum of prayers, this temple is a vibrant testament to the island’s living faith.

Here is a quick rundown of some places you can visit if you have 2-3 days in Taipei:

Where Art Meets the Streets
Taipei’s creativity is everywhere. We explored the Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA), uniquely housed in the old City Hall. It’s a brilliant example of adaptive reuse—historical brick architecture meeting cutting-edge, provocative art.

In the heart of the trendy Ximending district, we found the Red House Theatre. This octagonal landmark serves as a gateway to the city’s youth culture and LGBTQ-friendly hubs, blending 1908 nostalgia with modern artisan markets.

Skyline and Scenery

You haven’t seen Taipei until you’ve seen it from above. Taipei 101 remains the city’s undisputed icon, towering over the district like a bamboo stalk of glass and steel. For the best view of the tower itself, we took the Elephant Mountain trek. The steep climb was a small price to pay for the reward: a panoramic view of the skyline bathed in the golden glow of sunset.

Further afield, the Yehliu Geopark transported us to another planet. The wind-eroded rock formations, like the famous “Queen’s Head,” look more like sculptures than natural geology.

A Seasonal Surprise

Luck was on our side! Visiting during the last week of March, we were treated to a fleeting gift: Cherry Blossoms. Randomly spotting these soft pink blooms throughout the city’s parks felt like a magical endorsement of our travel timing.

The Soul of the City: Night Markets

When the sun goes down, Taipei truly wakes up. We threw ourselves into the neon chaos of Shilin and Raohe Night Markets. The sensory overload is the point. My personal highlights?

  • Tanghulu: Skewered fruits coated in a hard, glass-like sugar shell that cracks perfectly with every bite.
  • Spiced Eggs: Those small, dark, marbled eggs simmered in tea and spices—salty, savory, and addictive.

Final Thoughts

Taipei is more than a destination; it’s an experience that lingers. Whether you are trekking up a mountain, getting lost in a night market, or stumbling upon cherry blossoms in a quiet alley, this island gem never stops surprising you.

Don’t be a wasted soul, be “juan”derlust. Take it easy ebri’juan’…
